Your best friend has seen every version of you, and you have the photos to prove it, most of them unflattering. A birthday album hands those years back to them one page at a time, with a song about them playing underneath.

A birthday photo album for your best friend should look like your friendship: the trips, the bad haircuts, the screenshots of texts you still quote, and a few photos from the days you showed up for each other. Mix the funny ones with the true ones, add a short note, and send the link at midnight.

What your friendship looks like in photos

A photo album gift for your best friend is made of photos no other album has. Family albums have weddings and first days of school; yours has the gas station at 3 a.m. and the haircut you both swore never to mention again. Go through your camera roll with this checklist:

  • The trips. One photo per trip, two if it was the trip: the car packed to the roof, the terrible motel, the view you drove six hours to see.
  • The bad haircuts. Every era of both of you. The bangs, the bleach, the matching outfits you thought were a good idea at the time.
  • The screenshots. The first text, the group chat name, the plan for the trip that never happened.
  • The ordinary nights. The kitchen floor, the takeout containers, the dog that always sat between you on the couch.
  • Their big days, with you in the frame. Graduation, moving day, the keys to the first apartment, their wedding if you stood beside them.
  • Their people. The family that fed you dinner for a decade, their kids if they have them, the friends who orbit the two of you.
  • A recent one. The two of you as you are this year, at any table.

Leave out exes they'd rather forget, and anything that would embarrass them in front of their boss or their kids. A private link has a way of getting passed around the dinner table once they love it.

Picking the funny ones and the true ones

The funny photos make them laugh. The true ones make them stop. A birthday album needs both, and the order decides how it feels.

A few rules for sorting:

  • Funny only to you: cut it. Funny only to the two of you: keep it. Inside jokes are the point.
  • A true photo comes from a day one of you needed the other: the waiting room, the day after the breakup, the night before the big move.
  • Open on a laugh. The first few pages should make them snort, so their guard is down by the time a true one shows up.
  • Let the true ones land alone. Put one between two funny photos every few pages, instead of saving them all for the end.
  • Finish with a recent photo of you both. Whatever the years in between looked like, the last page says you're still here.

Say your best friend drove four hours the night your dad went into the hospital. There's no photo of that drive. There might be one of two gas station coffees on a dashboard, or of the two of you asleep in plastic chairs. That one goes in, right after their worst haircut.

We put your photos in an order that tells the story, and you open the whole album before you send it. Use that pass to check the rhythm: if three serious photos sit together, break them up with a laugh.

Screenshots count as photos here

Between best friends, a lot of the story lives in text. A screenshot can be the most recognizable page in the album, as long as you choose a few and clean them up.

  • Which ones: the first message, the text that started a running joke, the boarding passes, the playlist you made for the road, a video call from the year you lived in different cities.
  • Crop them: cut the notification bar, the battery icon and anyone else's name or number. Zoom in on the line that matters.
  • Put each one in its year: a screenshot next to photos from the same months reads like a caption for them.
  • Keep them to a handful: faces carry an album, and text works best as a break between them.

If you've been friends since before phones, the equivalent is the note passed in class or the birthday card they wrote you at 14. Take a picture of it and treat it like a screenshot.

Who else has photos of the two of you

You're in your best friend's photos and they're in yours, which means the best shots of you together were usually taken by someone else. Ask quietly, and ask early.

  • The friend who came on every trip and always had the camera out.
  • Their partner, by private message, never in a group chat the birthday person can see.
  • Their mom or dad, if you've been friends since school. Parents keep the photos kids lose.
  • Your own family, for the holidays they spent at your house.
  • Old roommates, for the years you shared a place or lived across the hall.

Give everyone a date a week before the birthday and tell them it's a surprise. If you're asking their parents, ask for two or three photos from before you met. Those are the pages your friend won't expect.

The note, and sending it at midnight

A best friend's note can be shorter and lighter than one for family: one line that teases, one line that's true, and a sign-off only they would get. For example:

Happy birthday to the only person who saw the bangs I cut myself and stayed. Twelve years of photos in here, and you're the reason most of them exist. Sound on, and don't skip the gas station.

Then pick the moment. Between close friends, birthdays often start with the first message after midnight, so make yours the album:

  • Night owl: send it at midnight their time, even if that means an alarm in a different time zone.
  • Early sleeper: send it at midnight anyway. It'll be waiting above every other birthday message when they wake up.
  • Seeing them that night: still send it in the morning. The album is for them alone; dinner is for arguing about page 12.
  • Far away: it goes as one link by text, WhatsApp or email and plays when they tap it, so another city or country changes nothing.

Start with the worst haircut

Pull the five photos you'd put in no matter what, the worst haircut included. Then make your best friend's birthday album: answer a few questions about them, about five minutes, and add up to 60 photos straight from your phone.

It's free to start, so you can build it tonight while the photos are still open on your screen. No app needed: they open the link wherever they are and the pages turn to their song. To see how it all fits together, read about the Digital Album.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you put in a photo album for your best friend?

Put in what only your friendship has: the trips, the bad haircuts from every era, screenshots of texts you still quote, the ordinary nights on the couch, and their big days with you in the frame. Add a few photos from the times you were there for each other, and one of the two of you this year. Leave out exes and anything that would embarrass them in front of family.

Should a best friend photo album be funny or sentimental?

Both, in that order. Open with photos that make them laugh, then let a sentimental one land every few pages between the funny ones. If the whole album is jokes, it reads like a roast, and if every page is serious, it can feel heavy for a birthday. Keep the inside jokes only the two of you understand, and cut the ones only you find funny.

Can I include screenshots of texts in a photo album?

Yes, and between close friends they're often the pages that get the biggest reaction. Choose a few: the first message, the text behind a running joke, a boarding pass from a trip. Crop out the notification bar and other people's names or numbers, and place each screenshot next to photos from the same time so it reads like part of the story.

How do I make a birthday album for a best friend who lives far away?

Gather photos from your own phone, plus anything mutual friends or their family can send, then send the album as one link by text, WhatsApp or email. It opens on their phone wherever they are. Time it for their midnight, not yours, and if you can, call a few minutes later so you get to hear the reaction.

How far back should a best friend birthday album go?

Start where your friendship started, then add two or three photos from before you met, borrowed from their parents or siblings. Those early photos tend to surprise them most. For a milestone birthday like a 30th or 40th, try to cover each stretch of the friendship: the years you met, the years you lived close, the years you didn't, and now.

Music has carried all of us through the hard days and the happy ones. I started Only Happy Tears after writing a song for my family to tell them how grateful I am. Their first reaction was happy tears. Now I want everyone to be able to give that moment to the people they love, at a price anyone can afford and with no subscriptions.
